Short answer

Shooting pain in the groin can come from the hip joint, inner-thigh muscles, nerves, or an injury, so the pattern needs careful assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common triggers
Pivoting, sprinting, kicking, and deep hip bending
Do not ignore
A groin lump, testicular symptoms, fever, or inability to bear weight

Possible sources

Pain brought on by pivoting, deep bending, or bringing the knee towards the chest can occur with Hip Impingement or a Hip Labral Tear. Gradual stiffness and reduced hip movement can accompany Hip Osteoarthritis. A sudden stretch, sprint, or change of direction may strain the adductor muscles. Burning, tingling, or pain spreading into the thigh can indicate nerve irritation. Groin pain can also come from non-musculoskeletal causes, so location alone is not enough to diagnose it.

Assessment may include walking, hip movement, resisted muscle testing, abdominal examination, and questions about urinary, bowel, or reproductive symptoms when relevant.

What may help

Pause sprinting, kicking, deep squats, and movements that reproduce the sharp pain. Keep gently mobile with short walks and comfortable hip movement; avoid complete rest unless advised. Ice wrapped in cloth may help after a recent exercise flare, while heat may ease muscle tightness. Do not force a groin stretch or return to sport because the pain briefly settles. Sports Physiotherapy can guide progressive adductor and hip strengthening after the cause has been assessed.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain continues, returns with activity, causes limping, or limits hip movement. Seek prompt help after a fall, with inability to bear weight, a new groin lump, testicular pain or swelling, or severe lower abdominal pain. Urgent care is needed for fever with worsening pain, vomiting, blood in urine, or new numbness and weakness. Sudden severe pain with faintness or a rapidly enlarging swelling needs emergency assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does the pain behave more like a hip-joint, muscle, nerve, or non-musculoskeletal problem? Which activities should I stop? How can I maintain fitness safely? What examination or imaging is appropriate? When can I progress back to sport?
