An orthopaedic hyaluronic acid injection is a regulated medical product placed into a joint by a qualified clinician for a specific musculoskeletal problem. Brand name, concentration, additives, sterility, and intended use matter; a cosmetic serum cannot be treated as an injectable product. A product label alone does not show that an injection is suitable for joint pain.

Check whether you are considering a topical cosmetic product or a clinician-delivered injection, then follow the instructions for that category. Do not inject a skincare product or obtain an injection without a clinical assessment. After an injection, seek urgent medical advice for increasing redness, heat, swelling, severe pain, fever, drainage, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. For a topical product, stop using it and seek help if you develop marked swelling, hives, blistering, or breathing symptoms. A painful or swollen joint that is rapidly worsening also needs assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
