Shin pain during running: what to know

Short answer
Shin pain during running often reflects a sudden increase in impact or training load, but focal or worsening pain should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First change
- Remove the running load that causes pain
- Return marker
- Walking is comfortable before impact training resumes
What may be causing it
Running repeatedly loads the muscles, tendons, and bones of the lower leg. Pain along a broader area of the shin can follow a change in distance, speed, hills, surfaces, footwear, or rest periods. Poor recovery and altered movement can add to the load.
Pain in one precise spot, pain that progresses from activity-related to rest pain, swelling, or discomfort with hopping raises concern for a bone stress injury. A stress fracture is one condition that can present with shin pain. The symptom pattern is more useful than trying to label the pain from running alone.
How to modify training
Stop running while each step is painful. Keep only activities that remain comfortable, such as gentle cycling or swimming if medically suitable. Check recent changes in training and return to running only after normal walking is comfortable. Start with easy, short sessions on a forgiving surface, leave recovery between runs, and change one training factor at a time. A physiotherapist can review strength, mobility, running form, and footwear.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain persists despite reduced running, recurs immediately on return, is sharply localised, or interferes with walking or sleep. Seek urgent care after a major injury, for inability to bear weight, severe swelling, deformity, a cold or pale foot, or new numbness or weakness.
Questions to ask
Ask whether you can cross-train, what finding would require imaging, and what progression is safe for your return to running. Describe your recent mileage, speed work, hills, surface changes, shoes, and the exact point where pain begins.

Questions people ask
Should I run through shin pain?
No. Continuing when each step hurts can increase tissue loading; switch to comfortable activity and seek assessment if it persists.
How can I return to running after shin pain?
Resume only when walking is comfortable, begin gently, increase one training factor at a time, and stop if pain returns.
