Shin pain during pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Shin pain during pregnancy may reflect changing load and movement, but one-sided swelling or severe pain needs prompt medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- One-sided swelling, warmth, redness, or severe tenderness
Why pregnancy can change leg comfort
As pregnancy progresses, posture, balance, walking pattern, and the load on the legs can change. Reduced activity followed by a sudden increase, swelling around the ankles, or calf and shin muscle fatigue may contribute to aching. Shin pain is not automatically a pregnancy complication, but the pattern matters.
Pain in one leg with swelling, warmth, redness, or tenderness is different from symmetrical muscle tiredness. It can signal a circulation problem and should be discussed urgently. A stress fracture is another condition that can present with shin pain, especially after repeated impact or a sudden activity change.
Comfort measures
Tell your maternity clinician about new or persistent leg pain before starting medicines or changing exercise. Rest from activities that reproduce symptoms, elevate the legs when comfortable, and use supportive footwear. Gentle movement may help stiffness if it does not increase pain. Do not apply very hot treatments to a painful swollen area, and do not take pain medicine unless your pregnancy care team confirms it is suitable for you.
When to get help
Contact your maternity team promptly for one-sided swelling, warmth, redness, worsening tenderness, or difficulty walking. Seek emergency care for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting, severe pain after an injury, or a cold or numb foot. Persistent focal shin pain also deserves assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask whether the pain pattern suggests muscle overload, swelling, a bone stress injury, or a circulation concern. Share which leg is affected, when swelling appears, your activity level, and any breathlessness or chest symptoms.
