Shaving rash in the genital area: what to know

Burning and evenly spread redness often follow razor friction or a new soap, gel, or deodorising product. Small tender bumps around hairs can be ingrown hairs or follicle irritation. Moisture and rubbing can worsen symptoms. A rash with a sharp edge, intense night itching, discharge, sores, or changes that do not match the shaved skin may instead need assessment for Contact Dermatitis, Ringworm, Scabies, or another condition.

Stop shaving and avoid waxing until the skin heals. Wash the external skin gently, pat dry, choose loose breathable underwear, and avoid fragranced products, antiseptics, scrubbing, and squeezing bumps. A cool clean compress may reduce discomfort. Do not put products inside the vagina or urethra. If you shave again, use a clean razor, plenty of bland lubrication, light strokes, and the direction of hair growth.

Get medical advice for worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, open sores, blisters, a lump that becomes very tender, unusual discharge, or pain when urinating. Urgent assessment is appropriate for severe swelling, rapidly worsening symptoms, or difficulty passing urine. A clinician can check for infection and conditions such as Intertrigo or Atopic Dermatitis.

Ask whether the bumps are irritated follicles or ingrown hairs, whether a cleanser or lubricant could be responsible, and which external treatment is safe for the exact area affected.
