Sharp urethral pain with kidney stones: what to know

A kidney stone may irritate the lining as it travels from the kidney toward the bladder and urethra. Pain can move from the flank or abdomen toward the groin, and urination may become painful or urgent. Some people notice blood in the urine, nausea or waves of cramping. Dehydration can make urine more concentrated and may contribute to stone formation, but urethral pain is not specific to stones. A Urinary Tract Infection or another urinary problem can produce similar symptoms, especially burning or cloudy urine.

Seek a GP Consultation for persistent, severe or unexplained pain. Bring details about its movement, urinary frequency, blood, fever, vomiting and your fluid intake. Drink normal amounts if you can and have no fluid restriction; do not force fluids through severe nausea. A clinician may test urine, assess kidney function and decide whether imaging such as an Abdominal Ultrasound is useful. Use pain relief only if it is safe with your health conditions and medicines.

Get urgent help for fever or chills with urinary pain, inability to pass urine, severe uncontrolled pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion or feeling suddenly very unwell. Blood in urine should be assessed, particularly when it is accompanied by pain. A blocked ureter or urethra can prevent urine flow, and infection behind a blockage needs rapid treatment.

Ask whether the pain fits a moving stone, whether urine testing or ultrasound is needed, how to manage pain safely, and which changes in urine flow or temperature require emergency care.
