What should you know about the shape of a fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a solid breast lump made from glandular and connective tissue. It may feel firm, smooth, and well-defined, and it can move slightly when pressed. Some are too deep or small to identify reliably by touch. Breast tissue can also feel different across the menstrual cycle, so compare changes over time rather than repeatedly pressing the same area.

A familiar shape does not rule out other causes. A new lump, a lump that changes, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or enlarged nodes needs clinical assessment. Most breast lumps are not cancer, but no lump can be classified safely from shape alone.

Arrange an appointment for any new or changing lump. A clinician may examine the breast and recommend a Breast Ultrasound, particularly when ultrasound can show whether a lump is solid or fluid-filled. Depending on the findings, age, breast features, and change over time, a Breast Biopsy may be offered to examine tissue. Do not try to squeeze, puncture, or massage the lump.

Seek prompt medical review for a rapidly changing lump, skin tethering or dimpling, nipple inversion that is new, bloody discharge, redness with fever, or a lump in the armpit. Urgent care is appropriate if breast symptoms are accompanied by severe illness. These features need evaluation; they do not establish cancer by themselves.
