What should you know about Shanchol cholera vaccine?

How the structures involved in Cholera differ from normal

Short answer

Shanchol is an oral vaccine that helps protect against cholera but does not replace safe water, sanitation, or prompt treatment of diarrhoea.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What Shanchol means

The vaccine is taken by mouth and trains the immune system to recognise cholera-causing bacteria. Protection is not immediate for every person and vaccination does not cover every cause of watery diarrhoea. Continue drinking treated water, washing hands, cooking food thoroughly, and avoiding unsafe food or drinks. Ask a vaccination service whether Shanchol is suitable for your age, health history, travel plans, or local public-health programme.

What to do

Follow the schedule given by the vaccination service and tell staff about allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, or recent illness before taking a dose. Keep the vaccine instructions available and complete the recommended course. If diarrhoea develops, begin oral rehydration promptly when you can drink, and seek medical advice about fluids and testing. A vaccine cannot treat cholera that has already started.

When to seek care

Get urgent medical help for frequent watery diarrhoea, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, faintness, confusion, very little urine, or marked weakness. These can signal serious dehydration, especially in children, older adults, and people with other illnesses. While arranging care, use oral rehydration solution as directed if the person is awake and able to swallow; severe dehydration may need IV fluid therapy.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cholera vaccine schedule applies to you, when protection is expected, and which side effects should be reported. Confirm whether another vaccine or a recent illness affects timing, and ask what rehydration plan to use if diarrhoea occurs.
