Severe sore throat treatment

Viral infections, including the common cold, influenza, COVID-19, and glandular fever, often need rest, fluids, and symptom relief rather than antibiotics. Tonsillitis or strep throat may need examination and, in selected cases, prescription treatment. Acid reflux and allergic rhinitis can irritate the throat without an infection. The symptom does not by itself establish which condition is present.

Drink regularly and choose soft, cool or warm foods that are easy to swallow. Lozenges, warm salt-water gargles, voice rest, and avoiding smoke can reduce irritation. A pharmacist or doctor can advise on paracetamol or another suitable pain reliever after checking your health history and medicines. If testing or examination points to a bacterial infection, take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not share it. Never use someone else’s antibiotics or medicine left from an earlier illness.

Seek same-day medical advice if pain prevents drinking, symptoms are worsening, or fever is accompanied by a rash or marked weakness. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, drooling, inability to swallow saliva, a thick or muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain with swelling, or neck swelling. Reduced urination, dizziness, or a dry mouth can signal dehydration and should be assessed promptly.

Ask what cause is most likely from your examination, whether a swab is useful, what treatment is safe with your existing medicines, how soon improvement should be expected, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently.
