Severe Body Aches and Sore Throat: What to Know

Influenza and COVID-19 can cause strong aches alongside fever, fatigue, cough, or throat pain. A common cold usually causes milder whole-body symptoms, while glandular fever can bring pronounced tiredness and swollen neck glands. Strep throat and tonsillitis can make swallowing painful and may need an examination or throat testing. Acid reflux can irritate the throat without causing a typical infectious illness. Allergic rhinitis may cause throat irritation from nasal drainage, but severe body aches point toward another process.

Rest and take small, frequent drinks; warm or cool fluids may soothe the throat. Soft foods can be easier to swallow. Use a suitable pain or fever medicine only as directed on its label, and ask a pharmacist about interactions or pregnancy. Avoid sharing cups and utensils, wash hands, and stay home while fever or marked illness makes close contact difficult. Do not start leftover antibiotics, because they may not treat the cause.

Seek prompt assessment for one-sided throat swelling, a muffled voice, severe dehydration, chest pain, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
