What should you know about septate uterus twin pregnancy?

A septate uterus contains a band of tissue that divides part of the cavity. In a twin pregnancy, clinicians need to see whether the babies are developing on one side or on both sides, where the placentas are attached, and whether the cervix and remaining cavity can be assessed clearly.

The effect is not identical for every person. The length and thickness of the septum, the type of twin pregnancy, and previous pregnancy history all shape the plan. The presence of a septum does not by itself predict the outcome, and an early scan cannot answer every later pregnancy question.

Arrange early care with an obstetric team experienced in complex pregnancy assessment. Ultrasound appointments may be used to confirm the number of pregnancies, their locations, growth, placental position, and the cervix. Keep a list of medicines, previous operations, bleeding episodes, and questions for each visit.

Do not begin bed rest, supplements, or activity restrictions without advice. If the septum was found before pregnancy, ask whether operative hysteroscopy should be discussed after the pregnancy rather than during it; any procedure during pregnancy requires a separate specialist decision.

Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic pressure, regular tightening, leaking fluid, fever, severe pain, reduced movement after you have been advised to monitor movement, or a sudden worsening of symptoms. Seek emergency care for severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or trouble breathing.

Are both pregnancies developing in the same cavity or on opposite sides of the septum? What type of twin pregnancy is present? How will growth, placentas, and the cervix be monitored? Which symptoms need same-day assessment? Could the septum affect delivery planning?
