Sentinel skin tag removal: what to know

A clinician first checks the growth's shape, colour, surface, stalk, and symptoms. This matters because a bump that resembles a tag may instead need another type of evaluation. Removal is usually considered when the lesion catches on clothing or jewellery, becomes irritated, bleeds from repeated friction, or causes cosmetic concern.

The method depends on size, attachment, body site, and the clinician's examination. Freezing, heat-based treatment, or snipping with appropriate clinical technique may be considered. The area may be numbed, and the treated spot can be tender or scabbed while it heals.

Tell the clinician about allergies, medicines that affect bleeding, immune conditions, and any previous problems with wound healing. After treatment, follow the dressing and cleansing instructions, avoid picking a scab, and reduce friction while the skin repairs. Contact the clinic if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful rather than gradually settling.

Have a growth reviewed before removal if it is rapidly changing, unusually dark, firm, ulcerated, or bleeding without clear friction. After a procedure, seek prompt advice for bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure, pus, spreading redness, fever, or worsening pain. A lesion that returns should be reassessed rather than repeatedly treated at home.
