What should you know about Selsun Blue for eczema?

Atopic dermatitis, commonly called eczema, is associated with an impaired skin barrier, dryness, itch, redness, and sometimes cracking or crusting. Selsun Blue is designed for selected scalp scaling problems, so it does not replace an eczema plan. A person can have eczema and a separate dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis problem, but the treatments may differ.

Product irritation can intensify itch and leave inflamed skin feeling tighter. Darkening after inflammation can also occur, particularly where scratching continues; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Do not apply Selsun Blue to eczema patches, cracked skin, open sores, or areas near the eyes unless your clinician has specifically instructed you. Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a fragrance-free moisturizer. Keep nails short and try not to scratch, especially during nighttime itch.

If the scalp has scale as well as eczema, ask whether a separate scalp treatment is appropriate. The right plan may involve a prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment, trigger avoidance, or another approach based on the examination.

Arrange care for worsening redness, painful cracks, crusting, oozing, swelling, or eczema that prevents sleep or normal activity. Prompt assessment is needed when skin becomes hot and tender or symptoms spread quickly. Seek urgent help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product.
