What should you know about seeds to treat prostate cancer?

Seed implantation delivers radiation from within the prostate rather than from a machine outside the body. Planning uses prostate measurements, scans, cancer findings, and an assessment of urinary function. Some sources remain in place and lose activity over time; a different form of brachytherapy may use a temporary source. Seed treatment can be considered alone or alongside external Radiotherapy for selected situations. It is not interchangeable with surgery, targeted radioactive medicine, or treatment for every stage of prostate cancer.

Ask the urology and radiation teams how your prostate size, urine flow, cancer features, and other health conditions affect the recommendation. Provide details of anticoagulants, supplements, allergies, and earlier urinary surgery. After the procedure, follow instructions about medicines, activity, hydration, and close contact. Burning, urgency, or a slower stream may happen during recovery. Keep follow-up visits because symptoms and treatment response are assessed over time.

Contact your treatment service if urinary symptoms are worsening, you see increasing blood, or you develop fever or significant pain. Go to urgent care for inability to pass urine, fainting, severe weakness, severe breathing trouble, or persistent heavy bleeding. Ask for written instructions before leaving so you know which changes are expected and which need immediate review.
