What should you know about seed therapy for prostate cancer?

Short answer

Seed therapy for prostate cancer is a form of brachytherapy in which small radioactive sources are placed in or near the prostate to deliver targeted radiation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Treatment type
Internal radiation delivered through planned seed placement.
Early concern
Difficulty passing urine requires prompt medical advice.

How seed treatment works

A specialist plans the treatment using examinations and imaging to map the prostate and nearby organs. During the procedure, thin needles guide seeds into planned positions. In permanent seed treatment, the sources remain in place while their radiation gradually reduces; other brachytherapy approaches use sources for a planned period and then remove them. The choice depends on the cancer’s features, prostate size, urinary function, and previous treatment. Seed therapy is different from external Radiotherapy, which directs radiation from outside the body.

Preparing and recovering

Tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, urinary symptoms, bowel problems, and previous operations. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and arranging transport. After treatment, burning or a weaker stream can occur as the prostate reacts. Drink according to your team’s advice, take prescribed medicines, and avoid strenuous activity until cleared. Attend every review so urinary function, treatment response, and any later concerns can be assessed.

When to seek care

Call the treatment team urgently if you cannot pass urine, develop heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, or worsening swelling. Seek emergency help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, or uncontrolled bleeding. Mild urinary irritation may occur after the procedure, but a sudden inability to empty the bladder needs prompt assessment. Use the radiation-safety instructions you receive, particularly around close contact with others.

Questions for your doctor

Is permanent or temporary brachytherapy suitable for my cancer and urinary function? How will the prostate be mapped? Which medicines should I pause? What symptoms should prompt a call, and how will follow-up testing measure the response?

Questions people ask

Will the seeds be removed?

Some seed treatments leave sources in place, while other brachytherapy methods use a source temporarily; your team will explain the planned approach.

Can seed therapy affect urination?

Yes. Temporary burning, frequency, or a weaker stream can occur, and your clinicians can prescribe relief and monitor you.
