Sea bands for pregnancy nausea: what to know

A sea band is an elastic wristband with a small stud that presses against the inner wrist. The pressure is intended to stimulate an acupressure point; the band does not release medicine into your body. Evidence and personal experience vary, so improvement is not assured.

Pregnancy nausea can occur with or without vomiting and may change through the day. Nausea after a meal, burning discomfort, diarrhoea, fever, or upper abdominal pain can point to another problem such as [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) or [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/).

Follow the product instructions and place the stud over the soft area on the inner wrist, commonly identified by measuring a few finger widths below the wrist crease. It should feel supportive rather than painful, numb, or tingling. Try one band on each wrist if the instructions recommend a pair.

Remove it if your skin becomes sore, swollen, or irritated. Small, frequent meals, plain snacks, cool drinks, and avoiding smells that trigger nausea may also help. Speak with a pharmacist or maternity clinician before combining a sea band with an anti-sickness medicine, especially during pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team or clinician if nausea prevents normal eating or drinking, vomiting keeps returning, or you are losing weight or passing very little urine. Urgent assessment is needed for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, blood in vomit, severe abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration.
