What should you know about SCORTEN and Stevens-Johnson syndrome?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a serious reaction that can damage the skin and mucous membranes, often after exposure to a medicine or infection. SCORTEN brings together clinical findings measured during hospital care, such as age, general health, blood-test results, and the extent of skin involvement. It is not a home test, does not identify the trigger by itself, and does not replace examination. The score helps clinicians decide how closely someone should be monitored and whether specialist support is needed. A changing score can reflect the person’s condition over time.

Suspected Stevens-Johnson syndrome needs immediate assessment in an emergency department. Tell clinicians about every recently started or stopped medicine, including non-prescription products, and do not restart a suspected trigger unless a specialist specifically advises it. Hospital treatment may focus on fluids, wound care, pain control, temperature regulation, infection prevention, and protecting the eyes, mouth, and genitals. Treatment decisions are individual; oral corticosteroid treatment may be considered in selected situations, but it must be prescribed and supervised.

Go to emergency care immediately for a rapidly spreading painful rash, blisters, peeling skin, sores in the mouth or eyes, difficulty swallowing, breathing trouble, fever, or marked weakness after a medicine or illness. Do not wait for a score or try to calculate SCORTEN yourself. Eye pain, light sensitivity, or blurred vision deserves urgent attention because eye involvement can threaten sight.

Ask which medicine or illness may have triggered the reaction, which body surfaces are involved, how the skin and eyes will be protected, and what monitoring is planned. Ask how the suspected trigger will be recorded to prevent accidental re-exposure.
