What should you know about sclerotic intraductal papilloma?

An intraductal papilloma develops from the lining of a milk duct. Sclerotic describes firm, scar-like tissue within the lesion, which can make its appearance less straightforward on breast imaging. It may be found because of a lump, nipple discharge, or an imaging change, although some people have no symptoms.

Imaging can suggest a papilloma but cannot always determine the exact cell pattern. A breast biopsy removes or samples tissue so a specialist can examine it. A diagnosis of benign papilloma does not by itself mean that a breast symptom is cancer; the tissue result and the surrounding imaging findings guide the next step.

Arrange the breast clinic follow-up recommended with your imaging report. Bring details about any lump, discharge, skin change, previous breast procedures, and medicines that affect bleeding. The team may recommend observation, a needle biopsy, or removal of the area, depending on its size, position, symptoms, and whether the imaging and tissue findings agree.
