What should you know about sclerosed fibroadenoma?

Short answer
A sclerosed fibroadenoma is a usually benign breast lump with increased fibrous tissue, and imaging or biopsy may be used to confirm the diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Tissue pattern
- Sclerosis means increased fibrous tissue within a fibroadenoma.
- Assessment
- Ultrasound and biopsy may help confirm the diagnosis.
- Treatment
- Monitoring or excision depends on symptoms, growth, and diagnostic certainty.
What sclerosed means
A fibroadenoma is made of glandular and connective breast tissue. With sclerosis, more dense fibrous tissue develops within the lump. This can make the lump feel firmer and can make its appearance on imaging less typical than a softer fibroadenoma. The word describes the tissue pattern; it does not by itself explain every new breast change.
Breast Ultrasound may help show the lump’s shape and internal features. If imaging cannot confidently identify the tissue, Breast Biopsy can provide a sample for laboratory examination. Your clinician will interpret the result alongside your examination and imaging.
Choosing follow-up or treatment
Take the imaging and pathology reports to your review appointment and ask whether the findings agree. Follow the recommended monitoring plan if the lump is not causing problems and the diagnosis is clear. Tell the clinician if it grows, becomes painful, changes the skin, or feels different from before.
Removal may be discussed when the diagnosis remains uncertain, the lump is enlarging or uncomfortable, or you prefer it removed after discussing benefits and drawbacks. Breast Lump Excision is one procedure used for selected breast lumps.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment for a new or changing breast lump, nipple inversion that is new, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, persistent focal pain, or swelling in the armpit. Seek urgent care for rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, fever, or feeling very unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Do the examination, ultrasound, and biopsy findings agree? What makes this lump appear sclerosed? Is monitoring suitable, and when should it be repeated? What change would make excision advisable?

Questions people ask
Is a sclerosed fibroadenoma cancer?
A fibroadenoma is usually benign, but a new or changing lump still needs assessment and the diagnosis should be confirmed appropriately.
Does every sclerosed fibroadenoma need removal?
No. Monitoring may be suitable when the findings are clear and the lump is not causing concern; removal is considered in selected situations.
