A scian otoscope is an ear-viewing instrument that helps a clinician inspect the ear canal and eardrum. The device usually combines a handle, light, viewing system, and a clean disposable or reusable speculum selected for the patient. The examination can help the clinician look for wax, irritation, fluid, or changes to the eardrum, but the instrument is one part of a clinical assessment.

The clinician gently positions the otoscope at the entrance of the ear and directs light into the canal. They may examine both ears and compare the appearance of the canals and eardrums. Children may need reassurance and a steady position because sudden movement can make the view difficult. An otoscope does not by itself identify every cause of ear pain, hearing change, dizziness, or discharge; symptoms and the rest of the examination still matter.
