Scarlet fever tummy ache: what to know

Scarlet fever is a bacterial throat infection, but the illness can affect the whole body. Tummy discomfort may accompany the fever and throat symptoms, and some children may vomit or eat less. Tummy ache does not establish the diagnosis by itself. The pattern is more informative: a sore throat with Fever, a fine rough rash, a red or coated tongue, and tender swollen glands can point the clinician toward scarlet fever or another infection.

Offer small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or diarrhoea is present. Soft foods can be offered when wanted; do not force meals. Record whether the pain is constant, where it is located, and whether movement makes it worse. Use medicines only according to professional advice and the label. Arrange assessment for tummy ache with a rash or sore throat, and follow any prescribed Antibiotic Treatment.

Seek urgent care for severe or steadily worsening pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, fainting, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt review is needed when urine becomes very infrequent, the person is unusually sleepy, or fever and a rash are worsening. Sudden pain focused in one area should be assessed rather than attributed to scarlet fever.
