Scarlet fever in children: what parents should know

Scarlet fever is linked to the bacteria that cause Strep Throat. A child may have a rough rash, sore throat, fever, red tongue, flushed cheeks, or swollen glands. The rash can feel like fine sandpaper and may be more noticeable in skin folds, while the child may seem tired or eat less because swallowing hurts.

Children do not always describe throat pain clearly, and symptoms can vary. A clinician can examine the throat and skin, consider a throat test, and distinguish scarlet fever from other infections or rashes.

Arrange prompt medical review if scarlet fever is suspected. Offer frequent drinks, soft foods, and rest; check that the child is passing urine and can swallow fluids. Use only age-appropriate medicines as directed by a healthcare professional or the product label, and never give a child someone else’s prescription.

Keep the child home from nursery or school until a clinician advises that returning is appropriate. Handwashing, covering coughs, and avoiding shared cups, cutlery, towels, and toothbrushes help protect siblings and classmates. Give prescribed Antibiotic Treatment exactly as directed.

Get urgent help if the child struggles to breathe or swallow, drools because fluids cannot be swallowed, has a swollen face or neck, becomes difficult to wake, or shows dehydration such as very little urine. A rapidly worsening rash, severe pain, or a child who is getting much sicker needs immediate assessment.
