Is There a Scarlet Fever Vaccine?

Scarlet fever is a toxin-associated illness caused by certain strains of group A Streptococcus, often alongside a throat infection. It can begin with [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/), [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) or tender neck glands before a fine rash appears. A vaccine for another infection does not protect against every cause of a sore throat, and no routine vaccine is used specifically for scarlet fever. This does not mean the illness cannot be managed; a clinician can assess the pattern and decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Wash hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing cups, cutlery, towels or toothbrushes. Reduce close contact while someone has active symptoms and follow local school or workplace advice.
