Does scarlet fever need antibiotics?

Scarlet fever is linked to the bacteria that cause Strep Throat. Antibiotics target that bacterial infection; they are not a substitute for assessment and are not useful for every cause of a rash or sore throat. A clinician may consider the rash, Fever, throat findings, Swollen Glands and any testing before choosing treatment. Do not use another person's medicine or an old prescription.

Arrange review promptly if scarlet fever is possible. If Antibiotic Treatment is prescribed, take each dose as instructed and complete the course unless the prescriber advises otherwise. Ask what to do after a missed dose. Rest, drink regularly and choose soothing foods for a painful throat. Keep hands clean and avoid sharing drinks, utensils or towels while infection may spread.

Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, fainting, severe confusion or inability to swallow fluids. Contact the prescriber quickly for hives, wheezing, severe diarrhoea, worsening Fever, a rapidly spreading rash or symptoms that fail to improve. A persistent Sore Throat should be reassessed when the diagnosis or treatment is unclear.

Ask whether testing is needed, which antibiotic is intended, how to handle allergies or a missed dose, and when the person can safely return to school, work or close contact.
