Scarlet fever day by day

Early illness may bring a raised temperature, tiredness, headache, painful swallowing and swollen neck glands. The rash can feel rough like sandpaper and may be more noticeable in skin folds. The tongue can look coated before becoming red and prominent. Symptoms do not follow an identical timetable for everyone, so the appearance or persistence of symptoms matters more than matching an exact day.

Arrange a medical assessment when scarlet fever is suspected, because it is linked to the bacteria that cause Strep Throat. Take prescribed Antibiotic Treatment exactly as directed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Encourage fluids, rest and soft foods if swallowing hurts. Wash hands, avoid sharing cups or cutlery, and keep the unwell person away from close contact until a clinician confirms when returning to school or work is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, unusual drowsiness, confusion, severe weakness or signs of dehydration. Contact a clinician promptly if the fever is worsening, the rash is rapidly changing, symptoms return after improvement, or treatment causes a concerning reaction. A persistent Sore Throat, Fever or Swollen Glands also deserves review when the diagnosis is uncertain.
