Scarlet fever and tonsillitis: what to know

Tonsillitis means the tonsils are inflamed; scarlet fever is a bacterial illness that may include this throat inflammation. The tonsils can look red or enlarged, sometimes with spots or a coating, and swallowing may be uncomfortable. A fine rash with a rough texture can appear on the body, and the tongue may become bright red after an initial coating. Fever and swollen glands can add to the picture. These signs do not identify one cause by themselves, so a clinician may need to examine the throat carefully.

Book medical advice when tonsillitis is paired with a rash, fever or significant difficulty swallowing. Sip water or oral rehydration fluids, rest, and use cool or soft foods if they are easier to manage. Avoid sharing personal items and wash hands often while symptoms are present.
