Scarlet fever and eye symptoms

Scarlet fever usually presents as a throat infection with [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/), swollen neck glands, and a fine rough rash. Eye redness, discharge, light sensitivity, or pain may have another cause, such as irritation or a separate infection. These symptoms do not by themselves confirm or rule out scarlet fever.

A clinician should consider the whole pattern: how quickly symptoms began, whether the throat hurts, what the rash feels like, and whether one or both eyes are affected. Arrange medical advice when eye symptoms appear with a scarlet-fever-type rash, particularly in a child. Wash hands, avoid sharing towels, and do not use leftover antibiotic or steroid eye drops. Gently clean discharge with clean water and use separate cotton pads for each eye. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong sensitivity to light, injury, swelling around the eye, or difficulty opening the eye.
