Scarlatina rash description: what to know

The rash can begin on the neck, chest, or torso and spread across the body. It may feel like fine sandpaper, with redness that can be harder to see on darker skin tones. Skin folds such as the underarms, elbows, or groin may look more deeply red. The face may appear flushed while the area around the mouth stays paler. A sore throat, fever, headache, swollen neck glands, or a coated tongue may occur, followed later by peeling skin. Other rashes, including contact dermatitis, drug rash, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, or scabies, can look different or overlap, so appearance alone is not diagnostic.

Because scarlatina is linked to a bacterial throat infection, arrange prompt medical assessment when a rough rash occurs with fever or sore throat. Until reviewed, drink fluids, rest, avoid sharing cups or towels, and wash hands regularly. Use only medicines suitable for the person’s age and health, following a clinician’s or pharmacist’s directions. Keep fingernails short and use a bland moisturiser if peeling feels dry; avoid scratching or applying strong creams without advice.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, marked drowsiness, confusion, a rapidly worsening rash, skin pain with blistering, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Same-day medical advice is sensible for fever with a spreading rough rash, severe throat pain, dehydration, or a child who is unusually unwell. A rash after starting a medicine also needs prompt review.
