What should you know about scaly skin under eyes?

The under-eye skin is thin and readily reacts to fragrance, makeup, cleansers, eye drops, lash products, and rubbing. Dryness or contact dermatitis may cause fine flakes, itch, redness, or a tight feeling. Seborrheic Dermatitis can affect the eyelids and nearby facial skin, while psoriasis may produce more defined scale elsewhere as well.

Scaling around one eye with pain, marked swelling, discharge, or vision change needs more urgent attention. Ringworm is possible on facial skin but should not be assumed from scale alone. Do not put non-eye medicines into the eye or directly on the eyelid without advice.

Pause eye makeup, lash glue, fragranced creams, and any recently introduced product. Rinse gently with clean lukewarm water, avoid rubbing, and use a very small amount of bland moisturising ointment on the surrounding skin, keeping it out of the eye. Do not self-treat the eyelids with steroid or antifungal creams unless prescribed for that location. A clinician can choose treatment for dermatitis, psoriasis, or infection while protecting the eye surface.

Get urgent medical advice for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked eyelid swelling, pus, fever, or redness spreading around the eye. Arrange a dermatology or primary-care review when scaling lasts, recurs, affects both eyes, or follows a product that you cannot identify.
