Scaly skin after sunburn: what to know

Short answer
Scaly skin after sunburn usually reflects the skin shedding damaged surface cells, so gentle care and sun protection help while it settles.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Flaking may follow redness and tenderness.
- Protective step
- Keep peeling skin covered from direct sun.
- Avoid
- Scrubbing, picking and breaking blisters.
What the peeling means
Redness, warmth, tenderness and later flaking can follow ultraviolet injury. Peeling is a surface response; pulling at loose skin can expose more sensitive tissue and increase irritation. New blisters, marked swelling or extensive raw areas suggest a more severe burn. Scaling that persists after the burn settles, spreads beyond the exposed area, or forms a ring may have another explanation, such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis or ringworm.
The symptom itself is described in the guide to Scaly Skin. A clinician can examine colour, texture, timing and distribution rather than judging the cause from peeling alone.
Comfort measures
Cool the skin with a damp cloth or a cool shower, then pat dry. Apply a bland moisturiser or petroleum-based emollient while the skin is slightly damp; Emollient Therapy explains how these products support the skin barrier. Drink to thirst, wear loose clothing and keep the area out of direct sun until healed. Do not scrub, exfoliate, use fragranced products, or break blisters. Avoid numbing products if they sting or irritate.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical advice for large blisters, worsening pain, pus, spreading redness, fever, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or signs of dehydration. Seek urgent help for fainting, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, or a burn involving the eyes. If scaling remains after the burn has healed or repeatedly returns, book a dermatology assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits healing sunburn, whether infection or another skin condition needs treatment, and which moisturiser is suitable for your skin. If recurring scaling is diagnosed, ask whether Narrowband UVB Phototherapy or another option is appropriate; antifungal treatment is relevant only when a fungal cause is confirmed.
