What should you know about scalp sunburn treatment?

Sunburn is an inflammatory response to ultraviolet exposure. The scalp may feel hot, tight, tender, or itchy, and redness can be harder to see beneath hair. Peeling may appear as the damaged surface sheds. A closely shaved scalp, parting, or uncovered crown is especially exposed. Repeated sun exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin over time.

Move out of direct sun and use cool, damp compresses rather than ice. Wash gently, avoid scratching, and apply a bland moisturiser or emollient to intact skin. Drink fluids and use a loose hat once contact is comfortable. Do not pop blisters or apply numbing products that irritate the skin. A clinician may advise treatment such as Emollient Therapy; topical corticosteroids are not suitable for every burn or broken area.

Get medical advice for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, pus, fever, dizziness, vomiting, confusion, or difficulty drinking. Urgent care is appropriate if the burn involves the eyes or face, or if a person exposed to heat or sun seems faint or unwell. A dermatologist can also assess persistent redness or unusual healing.

Ask whether the burn is superficial or blistering, which moisturiser is appropriate for your scalp, whether any medicine is safe with your conditions, and how to protect the area during recovery.
