Scalp Micropigmentation and Hair Transplant: What to Know

SMP creates the appearance of follicle points and can define a hairline or shade sparse regions. A transplant is a surgical procedure in which follicles are taken from a donor area and placed in a recipient area. The treatments therefore differ in recovery, suitability, maintenance and the kind of result they can provide.

Some people discuss SMP after a transplant to reduce the look of contrast or scars; others consider one approach instead of the other. The choice depends on donor hair, scalp health, the pattern of loss, hair goals and future changes.

Start with a scalp and hair assessment rather than choosing from photographs alone. Ask for a proposed hairline, donor-area review and an explanation of how ongoing thinning could affect the appearance. Tell the clinician about previous surgery, scarring, medicines and skin conditions.

If procedures are combined or staged, obtain clear instructions for each recovery period. Follow advice about washing, sun, exercise and contact with the treated area. Keep photographs and attend reviews so pigment, graft growth and changing hair density can be assessed separately.

After either treatment, contact the treating team for increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked swelling or a wound that is not settling. Urgent help is needed for breathing difficulty, widespread hives or swelling of the face or throat.
