Scabies Worse at Night: What It Can Mean

Scabies is caused by tiny mites that burrow into the outer skin. Itching may affect the finger webs, wrists, waist, armpits, genital area or buttocks, and a small rash or scratch marks may appear. Close contacts can have symptoms too, although itching may not begin at the same time for everyone. Night itching alone does not confirm scabies; eczema, bites and other causes can behave similarly.

Arrange an assessment if the itch is persistent, spreading, or affecting someone else in the household. Treatment usually involves applying a prescribed anti-mite medicine carefully over the recommended skin areas, repeating it when instructed, and managing close contacts together. Wash or isolate recently used clothing, towels and bedding according to the clinician’s directions. Scratching can break the skin, so keep nails short and use gentle skin care.

Seek prompt medical advice for pus, increasing warmth, marked swelling, fever, or painful crusted areas, which can signal a secondary infection. Arrange review if itching continues after the treatment plan, new burrows or rash appear, or an infant, older adult, pregnant person, or person with reduced immunity is affected.
