Nappy rash develops when moisture, warmth, friction and contact with urine or stool irritate the skin. The covered environment can make products feel stronger, and antiseptics may sting or worsen irritation on already inflamed skin. A rash with sharply defined edges, satellite spots or folds involved may suggest yeast rather than simple irritant dermatitis, which needs a different approach.

Change nappies promptly, rinse with lukewarm water or use a fragrance-free cleanser, and pat rather than rub. Give the skin brief nappy-free air exposure when practical. Apply a thin protective layer recommended for infants; emollient therapy can support the skin barrier. Avoid talc, fragranced products and repeated antiseptic use unless a healthcare professional specifically recommends it. If yeast is suspected, ask about topical antifungal treatment rather than treating it as ordinary irritation.
