Sausage Fingers and Rheumatoid Arthritis: What to Know

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition in which the immune system targets the lining of joints. Finger swelling, tenderness, reduced grip, and morning joint stiffness may develop, often on both hands, although patterns vary. A sausage-like appearance can also come from tendon-sheath inflammation or other conditions, including infection, psoriasis-related arthritis, or injury. Hand swelling alone does not establish rheumatoid arthritis. Assessment commonly considers the number and pattern of affected joints, stiffness after rest, other symptoms, examination findings, and blood tests or imaging when needed.

Arrange an appointment if finger swelling or stiffness continues, returns, or interferes with gripping. Keep the fingers moving gently within comfort and avoid prolonged forceful gripping during a flare. Note which joints swell, how long morning stiffness lasts, and whether symptoms affect the feet, wrists, or other joints. A rheumatology plan may include disease-modifying treatment, symptom relief, hand exercises, and joint protection. Anti-inflammatory medication may help some people, but suitability depends on medical history and other medicines.

Seek urgent assessment for a suddenly hot, red, very painful finger or hand, fever, a wound near a swollen joint, or rapidly worsening swelling. Prompt review is also sensible for new weakness, numbness, colour change, or inability to bend or straighten a finger. Early evaluation of persistent inflammatory symptoms helps protect movement and guides treatment.
