What should you know about sarcoidosis and itchy skin?

Sarcoidosis may affect the skin with bumps, plaques, colour changes, or dryness, and inflammation can create itch. Itch can also begin after a new product, medication, heat exposure, or skin barrier damage. The location, scale, swelling, burrows, and timing provide useful clues.

Atopic Dermatitis and Asteatotic Eczema can cause dry, itchy areas. Contact Dermatitis may follow exposure to fragrance, hair products, metals, or detergents. Scabies, Hives, Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, and Skin Yeast Infection have different patterns but can all be mistaken for a sarcoid-related symptom.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing, keep showers warm rather than hot, and choose loose clothing. Keep nails short and use a cool compress instead of scratching. Photograph changing areas and note new medicines, products, travel, household itching, and whether symptoms are worse at night.

Do not assume that an itch needs sarcoidosis treatment. A clinician may inspect the skin and decide whether a swab, scraping, blood test, or biopsy is useful. Treatment should match the cause, especially if an infection or medicine reaction is possible.

Arrange prompt review if itching is widespread, prevents sleep, causes open sores, or comes with yellowing skin, fever, or unexplained weight change. Get urgent help for lip or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, blistering, skin peeling, or a rapidly spreading rash.
