What should you know about sarcoid erythema nodosum?

The lumps sit deeper than a surface rash and may feel sore when walking or touched. Skin over them can look red or darker as inflammation changes. Several areas may appear over a short time, with ankle discomfort, tiredness, or fever sometimes occurring as part of the wider illness.

The appearance alone cannot establish that sarcoidosis is the cause. A clinician may ask about breathing symptoms, joint pain, recent infections, medicines, and other inflammatory conditions, then decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Arrange a medical review rather than squeezing or massaging the lumps. Resting the legs, raising them when comfortable, and using a clinician-approved pain measure may reduce strain. Wear supportive, non-irritating clothing and record when the lumps began and whether new areas appear.

Treatment focuses on the underlying cause and symptom burden. In selected situations, Oral Corticosteroid Treatment may be discussed, but it requires a clinician’s assessment because steroids can affect blood sugar, infection risk, mood, and other health conditions.

Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, a very hot or ulcerated area, fever that is persistent, or difficulty walking. Get urgent help for new shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or sudden eye symptoms.
