What should you know about salmonella food poisoning symptoms?

Salmonella infection can irritate the intestines after contaminated food or water is swallowed. [Abdominal Pain](/symptoms/abdominal-pain/) may feel crampy, while [Diarrhoea](/symptoms/diarrhoea/) can remove water and salts from the body. [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), [Nausea](/symptoms/nausea/) and [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/) may occur as the immune system responds. These symptoms do not prove salmonella; other infections and non-infectious problems can look similar.

Pay attention to urine output, thirst, dry mouth, dizziness and energy. Symptoms that prevent drinking are more concerning than symptoms that are uncomfortable but manageable.

Take small, frequent sips of an oral rehydration drink. Rest and eat bland foods when ready. Wash hands thoroughly and avoid preparing food for others while diarrhoea continues. Record the start of symptoms, fluid intake, urine changes and any blood in stool to share with a clinician.

Seek urgent care for blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with chronic illness may need earlier advice. Ask whether the symptom pattern needs a stool test, what dehydration signs to check, whether a medicine is appropriate, and when you can resume work, school or food handling. Share recent meals, travel and contact with anyone who has similar symptoms.
