What should you know about salmon food poisoning symptoms?

Foodborne salmonella infection irritates the digestive tract. Symptoms may include loose stools, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache and reduced appetite. The pattern and intensity vary, and symptoms can overlap with other causes of gastroenteritis, so a symptom list alone cannot identify the germ.

The main concern is fluid and salt loss. Dry mouth, unusual thirst, dark urine, passing urine less often, dizziness or marked tiredness can suggest dehydration. Young children, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity can become unwell more quickly.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution, particularly after diarrhoea or vomiting. When appetite returns, choose simple foods that you tolerate and avoid preparing food for other people while ill. Wash hands carefully with soap and water and clean bathroom surfaces to reduce spread.

Keep note of when symptoms began, how often vomiting or diarrhoea occurs, any fever, recent meals and other people who became ill. This information helps a clinician decide whether testing or treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for blood in stool or vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent fever, ongoing vomiting or diarrhoea, or symptoms in a person at higher risk of complications.
