What should you know about sakit na cholera?

Short answer
Cholera is an intestinal infection that can cause sudden watery diarrhoea and rapid loss of fluids and salts, requiring prompt rehydration.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main risk
- Rapid dehydration and electrolyte loss.
- First support
- Frequent, correctly prepared oral rehydration.
- Urgent option
- IV fluids when drinking is not enough.
Why cholera needs attention
Cholera can cause large amounts of watery diarrhoea, sometimes with vomiting. The main danger is dehydration: the body loses water and electrolytes faster than they can be replaced. Warning signs include intense thirst, dry mouth, little urine, dizziness, weakness, sunken eyes, or unusual sleepiness. Infants, older adults, and people already unwell can deteriorate quickly. The illness is linked to contaminated food or water and can spread where sanitation is limited.
Start replacing fluids
Begin Oral Rehydration Therapy promptly if cholera is suspected and the person can drink. Give frequent small sips, continuing after each loose stool; follow the preparation instructions exactly. Keep food and drinking containers clean, wash hands with soap, and avoid preparing food for others while ill. Medical assessment is needed because some people require antibiotics or supervised fluid replacement. Do not rely on soft drinks, very sweet drinks, or plain water alone for significant fluid loss.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical care for repeated watery diarrhoea, inability to drink, fainting, confusion, very little urine, cold or clammy skin, or severe weakness. A person who cannot replace fluids by mouth may need IV Fluid Therapy. Take extra care with children, older adults, and anyone with a chronic illness; do not wait for dehydration to become obvious.
Questions to ask
Could this diarrhoea be cholera or another infection? Which rehydration solution should we use? Does this person need testing, antibiotics, or IV fluids?

Questions people ask
Can cholera be treated at home?
Mild fluid loss may be supported with oral rehydration while seeking medical advice, but severe diarrhoea or dehydration needs urgent care.
Why is plain water not always enough?
Cholera causes loss of salts as well as water, so a correctly prepared oral rehydration solution replaces both.
