Rust-Colored Blood in Early Pregnancy: What It Can Mean

Blood can look rust, brown, or reddish-brown when it has taken longer to leave the uterus or vagina and has changed color. Light spotting can also occur after sex or an examination because the cervix may bleed more easily during pregnancy. These explanations cannot be confirmed from color alone.

Bleeding can also occur with conditions that need assessment, including an early pregnancy loss or an ectopic pregnancy. An infection of the cervix, such as chlamydia, is another possible cause of bleeding between periods or after sex. A clinician may ask about the amount and timing of bleeding, pain, pregnancy dates, and other symptoms, then decide whether examination, blood tests, or an ultrasound is appropriate.

Contact your obstetric or maternity service for advice, even if the bleeding is light and has stopped. Use a pad so you can observe the amount and color; avoid tampons. Note when it began, whether it is increasing, and whether you have cramps, one-sided pain, dizziness, fever, or unusual discharge. Do not assume that rust-colored blood is harmless or that it means a pregnancy loss.

If you have not yet had the pregnancy confirmed in the uterus, tell the clinician that clearly. Keep any appointment arranged for assessment, and ask what symptoms should prompt a return call.

Seek emergency care now for severe or worsening lower-abdominal pain, pain mainly on one side, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, weakness, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding or another urgent pregnancy complication. Seek prompt medical advice as well if bleeding is accompanied by fever, chills, or feeling acutely unwell.
