What should you know about rubeola in pregnancy?

Rubeola is another name for measles. It can begin with [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), cough, sore eyes or swollen glands, followed by a rash. Pregnancy makes an unexplained fever or possible exposure worth prompt clinical advice because the care team needs to consider both the pregnant person and the developing baby. Symptoms alone cannot confirm measles.

Avoid self-diagnosing from photographs or assuming that every rash is measles. Tell the team about the date of exposure, the first symptom, travel, vaccination history and anyone else who is ill.

Phone your maternity service, GP or [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) service before going in, and say that measles is possible. This allows safer arrangements for assessment. Rest, drink fluids and check before taking any medicine. Do not arrange an [MMR Vaccination](/treatments/preventive-care-and-vaccination/mmr-vaccination/) during pregnancy without specific clinical guidance; ask what prevention plan is suitable before or after pregnancy.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, a seizure or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact the maternity or medical team promptly after a known measles exposure, or for fever with a new rash. Call before attending a clinic so other pregnant patients and vulnerable people are not unnecessarily exposed.

Ask whether you need testing, monitoring or an altered appointment plan; which medicines are suitable; how to reduce household spread; and what vaccination advice applies after delivery. Mention gestational age, immune conditions and any previous MMR doses.
