Rubella MMR vaccine: what to know

MMR combines protection against measles, mumps, and rubella in one vaccine. Rubella can be mild in many children and adults, but infection during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby. Vaccination protects the person receiving it and reduces opportunities for the virus to circulate.

A sore arm, mild fever, tiredness, or a brief rash can occur after vaccination as the immune system responds. These effects generally settle without special treatment. The vaccine does not cause rubella infection.

Check the person’s vaccination record and arrange a GP Consultation if the history is unclear or a dose may have been missed. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, plans for pregnancy, immune problems, serious allergies, or a previous reaction to a vaccine. Keep the record updated after each dose.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a persistent high fever, unusual drowsiness, or symptoms that concern you. If rubella exposure is possible during pregnancy, seek prompt medical advice and avoid close contact with vulnerable people until advised.
