Rubella injection: what to know

MMR trains immune defences to recognise three viruses; it does not treat an existing rubella infection. Rubella may cause a rash, fever, swollen glands or joint pain, and symptoms can be subtle. A vaccination clinician considers previous doses, health conditions and pregnancy plans before giving advice. Protection planning matters especially for people who may encounter rubella during pregnancy.

Book a GP consultation if you need records checked or want to discuss an MMR injection. Tell the clinician about pregnancy or plans to conceive, immune suppression, allergies, medicines and past vaccine reactions. Take written records if available. Mild arm soreness, tiredness or fever can occur afterward; contact the clinic if the reaction concerns you.

Get prompt advice for a rash with fever, swollen glands or joint pain after possible exposure. If pregnant and possibly exposed, contact a clinician promptly rather than waiting for symptoms. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, collapse, confusion or rapid worsening after an injection.

Ask whether MMR is appropriate, how your history affects the plan, whether pregnancy changes timing, and which post-injection symptoms need review. Ask whether suspected illness should be assessed before attending.
