Round red itchy bumps on skin: possible causes

Round red itchy bumps can result from hives, eczema, irritation, bites, or infection, and their pattern helps narrow the cause. Observe whether each bump fades within a day, stays fixed, forms scale, appears in lines, or affects other household members.

Urticaria causes raised itchy welts that may come and go, sometimes after a trigger. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, and Contact Dermatitis can produce persistent itchy inflamed areas. Scabies often causes intense itch, especially at night, with bumps in characteristic locations and possible household spread. A Skin Yeast Infection prefers warm, moist folds and may have small nearby spots. Lichen Planus and Psoriasis can create more persistent, scaly or thickened lesions. The symptom pattern does not identify one condition by itself.

Cool the skin, keep nails short, and use a bland moisturiser if the surface is dry. Stop recently introduced fragrances, cosmetics, detergents, or jewellery and wash clothing and bedding if an infestation is being considered. Avoid scratching and do not share towels. Keep a diary of foods, medicines, heat, exercise, and exposures around flare-ups. Seek prompt assessment for fever, painful warmth, pus, rapidly spreading redness, skin peeling, or blistering. Arrange a visit when itch persists, disturbs sleep, spreads to close contacts, or the bumps leave bruises or open sores.
