What should you know about rotator cuff kinesiology taping?

Short answer
Rotator cuff kinesiology taping may provide temporary sensory support and movement awareness, but it does not repair a torn tendon.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Sensory and movement feedback
- Skin rule
- Use only on intact skin
- Treatment limit
- Does not repair tendon tissue
What tape can and cannot do
Elastic tape is placed on the skin around the shoulder to provide light tension and a reminder about posture or movement. Some people feel less discomfort during activity; others notice little change. Tape cannot restore tendon strength, correct a major tear, or replace a rehabilitation programme. Shoulder pain can also come from the neck, joint, or bursa, so the pattern of symptoms matters.
Using tape safely
Have a physiotherapist demonstrate the placement, especially if lifting or overhead work triggers symptoms. Apply it to clean, dry, unbroken skin without pulling tightly over the shoulder crease. Remove it slowly if itching, burning, blistering, rash, swelling, or increased pain develops. Combine taping with activity modification and prescribed exercises; avoid using reduced pain as permission to lift through weakness.
When to seek assessment
Arrange an assessment for sudden loss of shoulder strength, inability to raise the arm after an injury, marked swelling, deformity, or persistent night pain. Urgent help is appropriate for chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, or new arm weakness with neurological symptoms. A clinician can decide whether examination or imaging is needed.
Questions for your clinician
What is the likely source of my shoulder pain? Which tape pattern is suitable for my movement problem? What exercises should accompany it? How will we know whether weakness suggests a rotator cuff tear?

Questions people ask
Can tape heal a rotator cuff tear?
No. It may change comfort or movement awareness, while tendon healing and function require an appropriate clinical plan.
Can I exercise while taped?
Only within the activity limits set for your symptoms; tape should not mask worsening weakness or pain.
