An ingrown hair forms when a cut hair curves back into the skin or cannot pass through the follicle opening. Shaving, waxing, close trimming, friction, and naturally curly hair can contribute. A roll-on may contain a gentle exfoliating or soothing ingredient, but formulas differ and can irritate freshly shaved skin. Similar-looking bumps may be folliculitis, keratosis pilaris, or razor bumps, so a product label cannot establish the cause.

Read the directions and test a small area first. Apply only to clean, intact skin, avoid eyes and mucous membranes, and stop if burning or swelling develops. Pause close shaving while a painful bump settles; when shaving resumes, use a clean sharp razor, shaving gel, and light strokes in the direction of growth. Do not dig, squeeze, or pick at the hair, because this can worsen inflammation and leave a dark mark. Recurrent problems may respond better to a clinician-guided plan, including laser hair removal.

Seek medical advice for pus, spreading redness, warmth, increasing tenderness, a deep lump, or repeated scarring. Urgent care is appropriate for fever, rapidly spreading swelling, or severe pain. A bump that remains after the hair grows out also deserves review, especially if the diagnosis is uncertain.
