What should you know about rocky mountain fever symptoms?

This illness is linked to bites from infected ticks. Early symptoms can resemble Acute Bronchitis, Brucellosis, a Common Cold or COVID-19, so the illness cannot be identified from fever alone. A rash may appear later, may be subtle, and may not occur. Symptoms can worsen quickly, especially when treatment is delayed. Tell a clinician about outdoor exposure, a tick attached to the skin, travel, and when symptoms began.

Arrange same-day medical advice if fever or a new illness follows possible tick exposure. Do not wait for a rash before seeking assessment. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and record the temperature, symptoms, medicines and exposure details. Do not squeeze a tick or apply irritants; if one is attached, ask for safe removal advice. Keep children and adults with worsening symptoms under observation.

Seek emergency help for confusion, severe headache, difficulty breathing, fainting, seizures, a rapidly spreading or darkening rash, repeated vomiting, or unusual drowsiness. Urgent assessment is also needed for a very unwell child, dehydration, or fever with a severe general deterioration. Other illnesses, including Cellulitis or Chickenpox, can look different but still need appropriate examination.
