Ringworm treatment: what home remedies can and cannot do

Ringworm is a fungal skin infection, not a worm. It can produce an expanding, itchy or scaly rash, often with a clearer centre and a more noticeable edge. The fungus can spread through skin-to-skin contact, shared towels or clothing, and contact with infected pets. Scratching can irritate the skin and move the infection to nearby areas. A rash may also be described as Skin Rash or Scaly Skin when those symptoms are the main concern.

Wash the affected area gently, pat it dry, and keep it cool and dry. Wash your hands after touching the rash. Use a separate towel, change clothing that becomes sweaty, and avoid sharing towels, bedding, hairbrushes or clothing until the infection is under control. Wash these items regularly and let them dry thoroughly.

Do not rely on vinegar, garlic, bleach, essential oils or other irritating substances on the skin. They can cause burns or dermatitis and may delay effective care. Avoid steroid cream unless a clinician specifically recommends it, because steroids can mask or worsen a fungal infection. Arrange an assessment if the rash is spreading, involves the scalp or nails, keeps returning, or does not improve with suitable treatment. Seek prompt care for marked pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness, since these features can signal a different or additional skin problem. Children, people with reduced immunity, and people with diabetes may need earlier advice.

Stop a product that causes burning, blistering or a new rash and ask for medical guidance. Do not share prescribed or over-the-counter treatment with another person, because the diagnosis and treatment choice may differ.
