What should you know about ringworm treatment at home?

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that may cause an itchy, ring-shaped or scaly rash. Several skin conditions can look similar, so self-treatment is most suitable for a small, straightforward patch when a pharmacist or clinician agrees with the choice of product.

Apply the antifungal to clean, dry skin as directed and continue for the full recommended course. Do not use steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash; it can make the infection harder to recognise. Creams are not enough for infection in hair or on the scalp, which may require oral treatment.

Wash hands after touching the area, keep it dry, change clothing that becomes sweaty, and do not scratch. Use separate towels and washcloths, avoid sharing clothes or grooming tools, and launder items that contact the patch. Clean shared surfaces and inspect close contacts and pets for suspicious lesions.

Take a clear photo before treatment if you need to show a clinician how the rash began. If the patch expands, new areas appear, or irritation develops after the product, stop self-managing and seek advice about the diagnosis and next treatment.

Seek medical care for scalp or hair changes, broken skin, pus, fever, significant pain, facial or eye-area involvement, widespread rash, or symptoms in someone with reduced immunity. Arrange review when a correctly used product is not helping or the rash returns. A clinician can check for another cause and decide whether oral antifungal treatment is needed.
